Underlayment
The water-resistant layer installed over the roof deck and beneath the covering — traditionally asphalt-saturated felt, now more often a synthetic sheet.
In practice
Underlayment is the backup, not the primary barrier. On a tile roof it is usually the component that fails first and the reason the roof gets redone while every tile is still sound.
