Adjuster
The person who inspects the loss and writes the estimate. Carrier adjusters work for the insurer, independent adjusters are contracted by the insurer, and public adjusters are hired by and work for the policyholder.
In practice
Public adjusters are typically paid a percentage of the settlement. Their licensing and their fee caps are set by state law and vary widely, so verify both with your state department of insurance.
