Hail bruise
A soft, dented spot where hail has fractured the mat of an asphalt shingle without necessarily removing granules or breaking the surface.
In practice
Bruising is what adjusters look for and what distinguishes functional hail damage from cosmetic marking. It is felt as much as seen, and it is the single most argued-about observation in a hail claim.
