Drip edge
An L-shaped metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes that directs water off the roof edge and away from the fascia.
In practice
Cheap or omitted drip edge lets water wick backward under the shingles and rot the fascia and deck edge. It is inexpensive and it is required by code in most jurisdictions.
