Granule loss
The shedding of the mineral surfacing from an asphalt shingle, exposing the asphalt beneath to ultraviolet light.
In practice
Some granule loss is normal, especially in the first weeks after installation. Bald patches, and granules filling the gutters years later, mean the shingle is at the end of its service life — the granules are the UV protection.
