Counterflashing
A second layer of flashing set into or over a wall or chimney that covers the top edge of the base flashing.
In practice
Counterflashing keeps water from getting behind the flashing that is doing the actual work. On masonry it is normally let into a cut groove in the mortar joint, not surface-sealed.
