Step flashing
Individual L-shaped metal pieces woven in with each shingle course where a roof plane meets a vertical wall.
In practice
Step flashing must be layered piece by piece with the shingles. A continuous strip of metal or a bead of caulk in its place is the single most common cause of a wall-line leak, and it is not visible once siding goes back on.
