Deductible
The amount you pay before insurance pays anything. On wind and hail it is often a percentage of the dwelling coverage limit rather than a flat dollar figure.
In practice
A 2 percent wind-and-hail deductible on a $400,000 dwelling is $8,000. Read which kind you have before a storm, not after. Any contractor offering to waive, absorb or eat it is proposing insurance fraud that exposes you as well as them.
