Cricket
A small peaked structure built on the up-slope side of a chimney to divert water around it instead of letting it pool against the masonry.
In practice
Any chimney wide enough to dam water needs one. Without a cricket, water and debris pile up on the up-slope face and the chimney becomes a permanent leak.
