ASTM D3462 / D3462M

Standard Specification for Asphalt Shingles Made from Glass Felt and Surfaced with Mineral Granules

The baseline material specification a fiberglass asphalt shingle must meet to be called one. Manufacturers reference it on the wrapper.

What does the test involve?

Covers asphalt shingles of glass felt impregnated and coated on both sides with asphalt and surfaced weather-side with mineral granules. Shingles meeting the specification are intended to be applied with a headlap of not less than 2 in (51 mm), and are supplied with a factory-applied self-sealing adhesive or designed to interlock.

Common misconceptions

  • Compliance with D3462 is a floor, not a mark of quality. Nearly every shingle sold in the US meets it.
  • Performance after the shingle is installed and in service is explicitly outside the scope of this specification. It describes the product as manufactured.
  • The most recent edition we have located is D3462/D3462M-23. We have read the public abstract, not the full paywalled standard, so we do not publish its numeric physical requirements.
