Wind resistance of asphalt shingles
The wind speed an asphalt shingle has been tested to resist. Two different methods produce two different sets of class letters, and they are not interchangeable.
What does the test involve?
D3161 is a fan-induced test: shingles are installed on a deck and exposed to a directed airstream. D7158 is an uplift-force method that calculates resistance from mechanical properties including shingle rigidity and sealant bond strength.

Common misconceptions
- D3161 Class D and D7158 Class D are different things at different speeds. Always read the standard, not just the letter.
- IRC R905.2.6.1 accepts D3161 Class D or D7158 Class G where V(asd) is 100 mph or less; D3161 Class F, TAS 107, or D7158 Class H are accepted for all wind speeds.
- A rating assumes a specific fastening pattern and that the sealant strip has bonded. A shingle installed in cold weather that never sealed has no meaningful wind rating at all.
